Bakalarska Street Market, Warsaw
Warsaw’s Asian Town, a child of the transformation and the Jarmark Europa market, is one of the most inclusive and multicultural places in this capital city. Between stalls, bars, and salons, in a world of tempting visuals and futuristic cocktails straight out of a sci-fi movie, the legendary “Alley of Claws” (manicure salons) hosted a multi-site exhibition, where the contemporary art took place directly on the fingernails. Designs were created by contemporary artists whose art explores the syncretic identity of systems such as the nation, the city, and the internet. #nailart, one of the most popular hashtags of the pandemic era, was used here as a new and emergent exhibition format. On the day of the opening, local Vietnamese manicurists transcribed the works of each artist onto the nails of anyone interested in contemporary art, grassroot architecture, bargains, and nail art. The exhibition at the bazaar was an opportunity to redistribute art outside the institutional framework, through an economy typically unrelated to that of contemporary art.
